India achieved a major milestone in the global space economy today with the successful launch of its first privately-developed orbital rocket, Vikram-1. Built by Skyroot Aerospace, the 22-metre rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, successfully placing customer payloads into a 450km low-Earth orbit. This historic mission makes India only the third country in the world to reach orbital launch capability through a private enterprise.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the mission as a moment that will encourage the nation’s youth to innovate fearlessly. The successful flight marks a massive turning point for India’s rapidly growing private space sector, validating the vehicle’s advanced propulsion and avionics systems for future commercial flights.
