Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik addressed the State Assembly today regarding a significant gap between the demand and local production of eggs in Odisha, which has driven retail prices up to Rs 9 per piece in several regional markets. The Minister revealed that the state’s total annual demand stands at approximately 138 crore eggs, while local production is only 101 crore, forcing Odisha to import around 15 lakh eggs daily from neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh to bridge the deficit.
To help stabilize prices and reduce dependency on imports, the state government is formulating new measures to boost local commercial poultry farming. Mallik assured the Assembly that despite the current shortfall and fluctuating market rates, active efforts are underway to improve the local supply chain so that adequate, affordable protein sources become accessible to all residents.
