Odisha Flood Crisis: Sapua River Swells, Inundating Villages in Athagarh and Badamba

State

Continuous heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours has created a grim flood-like situation in parts of Odisha, triggered by an active monsoon and a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. The rapid swelling of the Sapua river has severely affected low-lying areas in Cuttack district, particularly in Athagarh, Tigiria, and Badamba, isolating several villages and submerging hundreds of hectares of agricultural land.

In Athagarh, villages under the Tarading Panchayat have been completely cut off by five feet of floodwater, while a 10-foot breach in Badamba’s Diniari bridge has left hundreds of residents stranded. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rain warnings for the next 48 hours, prompting the district administration and fire service personnel to intensify rescue operations and closely monitor water levels.
