Cuttack, 5/1 : Odisha Police has suspended Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Bijaya Kumar Barik of the CRRI Police Station in Cuttack following his arrest by the Odisha Vigilance Directorate in connection with a corruption case. The suspension order was issued on Monday, January 5, 2026, by the Odisha Police Headquarters, with disciplinary proceedings now initiated against the police official.
Inspector Barik was apprehended by Vigilance sleuths on Sunday, January 4, 2026, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 from a licensed liquor vendor. The bribe was reportedly sought to ensure the smooth operation of the vendor’s business. He was caught red-handed at Rajmahal Chhak in Bhubaneswar while accepting the illegal gratification.
The action against Barik stems from Vigilance Cell Police Station Case No. 01, registered on January 3, 2026, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Following his arrest, Vigilance teams conducted simultaneous raids at various locations linked to the inspector. These searches included his government quarters in Unit-1, Bhubaneswar, and his office chamber. During these raids, officials recovered over Rs 4.96 lakh in cash, 150 grams of gold ornaments, and 10 expensive wristwatches. Further investigations also led to the detection of a triple-storey building registered in his wife’s name at Sishupalgarh, Bhubaneswar, and a newly constructed double-storey building in his native village of Derabis in Kendrapara district.
The suspension order, approved by the Director General of Police (DGP) Y.B. Khurania, was invoked under Rule 840 of the Police Manual Rules (PMR), 1940, and is deemed to be in the interest of public service. During the period of his suspension, Inspector Barik will remain under the disciplinary control of the Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack. He will be entitled to receive subsistence allowance and dearness allowance as admissible under Rule 90 of the Orissa Service Code. An additional IIC has been placed in charge of the CRRI Police Station temporarily, with a permanent replacement expected soon. Further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
