Bhubaneswar, 5/1 : In a significant operation against illegal liquor trade, Ramanaguda police in Rayagada district have arrested two individuals and confiscated a substantial quantity of 356 litres of foreign liquor. The arrests were made on Monday as part of heightened vigilance in the region.
The two arrested persons have been identified as Anuj Kumar Yadav, a resident of Bihar, and Ganesh Himirika, who hails from Debadala village under Chandili police station. The police action follows a tip-off received during routine patrolling, which led to the interception of a suspicious Bolero vehicle bearing registration number OD-07F-9444.
Upon inspection of the vehicle, law enforcement officers discovered a large consignment of foreign liquor, comprising various brands. Preliminary investigations suggest that the illegal consignment was being smuggled from Rayagada district and was destined for Gajapati district.
Ramanaguda police have registered a case, specifically Ramanaguda PS Case No. 2, against the accused and subsequently produced them before the court on Monday. Authorities are continuing their probe to ascertain the origin of the seized liquor, identify its intended recipients, and uncover other individuals potentially involved in this illicit smuggling network.
Notably, one of the arrested individuals, Anuj Kumar Yadav, has a prior record. He was previously apprehended in connection with supplying fake liquor in the district. Despite being out on bail, Yadav allegedly resumed his involvement in the illegal trade, leading to his recent arrest. The flourishing illegal liquor business has been a concern for legitimate foreign liquor dealers in the area. Concerns have also been raised about the consumption of spurious liquor, which has reportedly led to fatalities in the region, with some alleging lax monitoring by enforcement agencies. This latest seizure underscores the ongoing efforts by the police to curb such illegal activities in Odisha.
