New Delhi, 8/1 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep grief and shock over the untimely demise of Agnivesh Agarwal, the son of Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal. Agnivesh, 49, passed away in the United States on Wednesday following a sudden cardiac arrest while recovering from a skiing accident.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi responded to Anil Agarwal’s emotional announcement of the tragedy. “The untimely passing of Shri Agnivesh Agarwal is deeply shocking and saddening. The depth of your grief is evident in this touching tribute. Praying that you and your family find continued strength and courage. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister wrote.
The tragedy unfolded at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where Agnivesh was undergoing treatment. According to the Vedanta Chairman, his son had sustained injuries in a skiing accident but was reportedly recovering well and was believed to be out of danger. However, a sudden cardiac arrest on Wednesday claimed his life, turning what was a period of recuperation into a devastating loss for the family.
Anil Agarwal, in a moving tribute, described the event as the “darkest day” of his life. “We believed the worst was behind us. But fate had other plans, and a sudden cardiac arrest snatched our son away from us,” he wrote. Expressing the profound pain of a parent outliving a child, he added, “A son is not meant to leave before his father. This loss has shattered us in ways we are still trying to comprehend.”
Agnivesh Agarwal was a significant figure in the business world, holding the position of Chairman at Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), a subsidiary of the Vedanta Group. He had previously served as the Chairman of Hindustan Zinc and was the founder of Fujairah Gold, a metal refinery in the UAE. Born in Patna on June 3, 1976, he was an alumnus of the prestigious Mayo College in Ajmer.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Agnivesh was remembered by his father as a multi-faceted personality—a sportsman, a musician, and a compassionate leader who remained “simple, warm, and deeply human” despite his success. Anil Agarwal highlighted his son’s patriotic vision, recalling how Agnivesh frequently spoke about building a self-reliant India and ensuring that the nation did not lag behind on the global stage.
The news has sent shockwaves through the Indian corporate community, with tributes pouring in for the late industrialist. The Prime Minister’s condolences underscore the significance of the loss, acknowledging the grief of one of India’s most prominent business families.
