Puri Jagannath Temple Implements Strict VIP Protocol, New SOP Announced

ରାଜ୍ୟ

Puri, 5/1 : The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in Puri, Odisha, has formally drafted a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to regulate visits by Very Important Persons (VIPs), aiming to ensure a more organized and equitable darshan experience for all devotees. This significant move was announced by SJTA Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee on Monday, January 5, 2026, outlining a stricter protocol for VIP entry and movement within the revered 12th-century shrine.

The newly prepared SOP emphasizes strict adherence to protocol, controlled darshan arrangements, and stringent restrictions on mobile phone usage inside the temple premises. This initiative seeks to streamline the management of VIP visits, thereby preventing disruptions to daily rituals and ensuring a secure and organized environment for thousands of devotees who throng the temple daily.

According to Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee, the temple administration will bear exclusive responsibility for the management of VIP protocol. This centralized approach is expected to eliminate past coordination issues and ensure that all visitors, irrespective of their status, adhere to the established guidelines. Padhee also expressed regret over a recent controversy concerning barricaded darshan arrangements and affirmed the administration’s commitment to preventing such incidents in the future.

A key aspect of the new SOP includes stricter curbs on mobile phones. Only personnel directly involved in essential temple-related duties will be permitted to carry mobile phones inside the premises. This measure is aimed at maintaining the sanctity of the shrine and enhancing security. The Chief Administrator highlighted the crucial role of a commander within the temple administration to ensure the smooth performance of daily rituals and stated that regular monthly coordination meetings would be held to review and implement the new procedures effectively.

The decision to introduce this comprehensive SOP reflects the temple administration’s dedication to maintaining discipline and ensuring a harmonious experience for all visitors to the Puri Jagannath Temple. It underscores a proactive approach to managing large congregations, especially during festive seasons and special occasions, by establishing clear guidelines for VIPs and emphasizing the importance of a well-coordinated system. The new regulations are expected to foster a more respectful and orderly environment within one of India’s most significant pilgrimage sites.
