India has achieved a historic milestone in public health today, with the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) officially granting market authorization for the country’s first dengue vaccine, QDENGA. Developed by Takeda Biopharmaceuticals, the live-attenuated tetravalent vaccine is approved for individuals aged 4 to 60 years and is designed to provide robust protection against all four serotypes of the dengue virus.
Unlike earlier vaccines, QDENGA does not require any pre-vaccination screening or blood testing to determine prior infection, making it highly practical for routine immunization and public health settings. Administered in two subcutaneous doses given three months apart, this timely approval comes as a major breakthrough for India, which currently bears nearly one-third of the global dengue burden and faces rising seasonal outbreaks.
