Luxembourg City, 8/1 : In a significant move to recalibrate India’s engagement with Europe, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has identified Luxembourg as a pivotal partner for future-facing collaborations, specifically in the realms of Financial Technology (Fintech) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking during his official visit to the Grand Duchy, Jaishankar emphasized that the relationship between New Delhi and Luxembourg City has evolved beyond traditional diplomacy into a strategic technological alliance.
During high-level delegation talks with Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel, Jaishankar underscored the untapped potential of the 78-year-old diplomatic relationship. While acknowledging the “very solid trade account” currently shared by the two nations, the External Affairs Minister pointed to the digital domain as the new frontier for cooperation.
“I think many of the interesting issues of our times—fintech, space, the entire digital world, AI—these are all issues where I think we can collaborate much more profitably than we have done,” Jaishankar remarked during his opening statement.
The focus on Fintech is particularly strategic. Luxembourg is Europe’s largest investment fund center and a global banking hub, while India boasts one of the world’s most dynamic fintech ecosystems, driven by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and a booming startup culture. The synergy between Luxembourg’s regulatory maturity and financial depth, combined with India’s scale and technological prowess, presents a unique opportunity for cross-border innovation.
Beyond finance, the talks delved into the burgeoning space sector. Luxembourg has carved a niche for itself in the global space economy, particularly in satellite communications and asteroid mining regulations. Jaishankar’s mention of space cooperation signals India’s intent to leverage Luxembourg’s specialized capabilities to bolster its own ambitious space program.
The visit also carried significant geopolitical weight regarding India’s broader European strategy. Jaishankar described Luxembourg as a “very important partner in itself, but also with the European Union.” He praised Minister Bettel for his consistent advocacy of deepening ties between India and the EU, noting that Luxembourg’s voice within the bloc is of “great value” to New Delhi. This comes at a crucial time as India seeks to accelerate negotiations on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Jaishankar also called on Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden, discussing the expansion of cooperation in investments and talent mobility. The discussions highlighted a mutual desire to facilitate the movement of skilled professionals, a key demand for India’s IT and service sectors.
The visit, part of a broader six-day tour including France, reaffirms India’s commitment to engaging with key European powers not just on political grounds, but as essential partners in the global race for technological leadership. As the digital landscape shifts, the India-Luxembourg partnership appears poised to move from a transactional trade relationship to a strategic digital pact.
