Inspired by the recent success of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in forcing the resignation of the education minister, a newly formed online pressure group called the ‘E20 Janta Party’ is rapidly gaining massive traction on social media. Demanding greater consumer choice in India’s fuel policy, the digital campaign is aggressively calling for the resignation of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari over the government’s ethanol-blended petrol (E20) rollout. Within hours of its launch, the group’s followers surged to over 48,000 on X, highlighting a growing mobilization of vehicle owners.
The movement clarifies that it is not seeking free fuel or subsidies, but rather demanding the clear availability and option to purchase 100% pure unblended petrol alongside the E20 blend at retail outlets. Protesters and consumers allege that the E20 fuel is reducing vehicle fuel efficiency, increasing maintenance costs, and adversely affecting engine performance, particularly in older vehicles. Expanding beyond the digital space, the campaign has received backing from sections of the transport industry, with taxi and tour operator associations announcing a protest march to Parliament on August 4 against the E20 mandate.
