Bhubaneswar: Supporters of Patkura MLA Arvind Mahapatra staged a show of strength at Shankha Bhavan, urging the Biju Janata Dal leadership to reconsider the decision to suspend him from the party. A delegation submitted a memorandum to senior leaders Devi Mishra and Pratap Jena, asserting that Arvind Mahapatra is a young leader who has not indulged in any anti-party activities. They claimed the suspension was taken in haste and appealed for its immediate withdrawal.
Party leaders reportedly listened to the supporters’ concerns patiently and described the interaction as constructive. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty stated that the matter was discussed in a positive atmosphere. However, sources within the party indicated that despite pressure from supporters, a reversal of the suspension appears unlikely, as party discipline remains a top priority within the BJD.
Political observers note that the party leadership is currently attempting to balance internal dissent while maintaining strict organisational discipline. Following its loss of power in the 2024 elections, the BJD is focused on rebuilding its structure and reinforcing leadership authority. Analysts believe that yielding to pressure in this case could set an undesirable precedent, making a rollback of the suspension a difficult decision for the party.
