Bhubaneswar, 12/1 : The political mercury in Odisha is rising sharply as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) engage in a fierce war of words, setting the stage for the highly anticipated local body elections slated for later this year. With the control of grassroots institutions at stake, both parties have intensified their rhetoric, turning administrative issues into major electoral flashpoints.
The latest flashpoint in this escalating confrontation is the state’s paddy procurement process. BJD supremo and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik launched a scathing attack on the Mohan Charan Majhi-led government this week, accusing the administration of “betraying” the farming community. In a strongly worded statement, Patnaik alleged that the procurement system has “collapsed,” forcing farmers to spend winter nights under the open sky at mandis to sell their produce. “The government that promised to double farmers’ income is now making them sleep on the roads,” Patnaik remarked, signaling a return to aggressive street politics for the regional party that lost power in 2024 after a 24-year reign.
Countering these allegations, the BJP has dismissed the BJD’s outcry as “political theatrics.” BJP Vice President Jatin Mohanty hit back, asserting that the current logistical issues are a legacy of the “institutional rot” left behind by the previous regime. The ruling party claims it is working overtime to streamline the mandis and has accused BJD cadres of orchestrating disruptions to malign the new government.
Adding fuel to the fire is the controversy surrounding the “No PUC, No Fuel” policy. The state government’s attempt to enforce strict Pollution Under Control (PUC) norms led to massive queues and public outcry earlier this month, forcing a temporary rollback. The BJD seized upon this “policy flip-flop” as evidence of administrative incompetence. “What started as a sudden announcement quickly descended into chaos,” the BJD leadership stated, portraying the BJP administration as inexperienced and insensitive to public convenience.
Beyond the daily governance skirmishes, the strategic maneuvering for the urban local body (ULB) polls is evident in the government’s recent administrative decisions. The BJP government has aggressively pushed for the creation of new Notified Area Councils (NACs) and the upgradation of existing ones into municipalities—a move seen by political analysts as an attempt to redraw the electoral map and consolidate urban votes.
The sparring has also extended to the sensitive Polavaram project issue, with the BJD accusing the “double-engine” government of failing to protect the interests of tribals in Malkangiri district. With the Panchayat and Municipal elections serving as the first major test of popularity for CM Mohan Majhi since his historic 2024 victory, and a fight for survival for the BJD, the rhetoric is expected to get shriller in the coming weeks.
