Beirut, 16/1 : Tensions along the northern frontier escalated sharply on Friday as Israeli airstrikes killed two people in Lebanon, while United Nations peacekeepers reported a direct attack on their positions involving a drone-dropped grenade. The incidents mark a volatile turn in the fragile security landscape, occurring despite the ceasefire agreement that has been technically in place since November 2024.
According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, an Israeli strike targeted a vehicle near the Syrian border earlier today, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Security sources indicated the strike occurred in a remote area often used for transit, though the identities of the victims were not immediately released. In a separate incident reported by Arab News, a strike on a vehicle in the southern village of Mansuri killed one person, while another fatality was recorded in Mayfadun following an overnight raid. The cumulative violence has drawn sharp condemnation from Lebanese officials, who accused Tel Aviv of systematic breaches of the truce.
In a concerning development for international observers, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) issued a statement confirming that one of its patrols came under attack. A drone, identified as Israeli by the peacekeepers, reportedly “dropped a grenade” near UN troops stationed in the south. While no peacekeepers were killed in the explosion, the force described the incident as “one of the most serious violations” of its mandate and the cessation of hostilities agreement. “This direct targeting of peacekeepers is unacceptable and threatens the stability of the entire region,” a UNIFIL spokesperson said in a press briefing this afternoon.
The Israeli military (IDF) has not issued a specific denial regarding the UN incident but confirmed ongoing operations against what it termed “Hezbollah infrastructure.” An IDF spokesperson stated that the air force had targeted weapons depots and facilities used by the group to rebuild its capabilities in the Bekaa Valley and southern Lebanon. Israel maintains that its actions are necessary preemptive measures against rearmament efforts that violate the terms of the 2024 agreement.
The violence comes as diplomatic efforts struggle to hold the ceasefire together. Reports from Beirut suggest that the Lebanese army has been working to implement the disarmament of armed factions south of the Litani River, a key condition of the truce. However, today’s strikes and the brazen attack on UN forces have raised fears that the conflict could spiral back into full-scale warfare.
