Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and former Odisha Minister Susant Singh passed away today at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar following a prolonged illness. The prominent political figure had been undergoing treatment for severe health complications for an extended period. His health condition reportedly deteriorated earlier this morning, and despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he breathed his last.
Singh was a political heavyweight in western Odisha, having been elected as the MLA from the Bhatli constituency three consecutive times in 2009, 2014, and 2019. Known for his strong grassroots connection and developmental initiatives, he handled crucial ministerial portfolios during the previous BJD government’s tenure. Although he suffered an electoral defeat in the 2024 assembly elections to BJP’s Irasis Acharya, his demise has cast a pall of gloom over the state’s political fraternity. Leaders cutting across party lines have expressed their deep condolences over the loss of the veteran leader.
