The sacred Adhara Pana ritual of the Holy Trinity was performed with deep devotion on their respective chariots stationed in front of the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri. Following the magnificent Suna Besha, servitors offered a special sweet drink to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra in massive cylindrical earthen pots that reach up to the lips (Adhara) of the deities. The refreshing, cooling drink is traditionally prepared using rich ingredients such as milk, fresh cheese (chhena), sugar, banana, camphor, and aromatic spices.
As per the centuries-old tradition, once the deities are offered the drink, the servitors deliberately smash the earthen pots on the chariots, spilling the sacred liquid entirely over the wooden platforms. This highly symbolic act ensures that the spilled Adhara Pana is not consumed by humans, but instead quenches the thirst of the Parswa Devatas (subsidiary deities), guardian spirits, and invisible wandering souls who accompanied and protected the chariots throughout the Rath Yatra. The conclusion of this ritual paves the way for the final Niladri Bije ceremony, where the deities will return to the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.
