Malkangiri: The Maoist organisation has suffered a significant setback as nine hardcore Maoist cadres surrendered with weapons in a major success for security forces. The surrender took place before the Inspector General of Police, Raipur Range, and the Superintendent of Police of Dhamtari district in neighbouring Chhattisgarh. The surrendered cadres were carrying a combined cash reward of ₹47 lakh on their heads. Among them are seven women and two men, all of whom were active members of various Maoist formations, including the Odisha State Committee, Sita Nadi Area Committee and Mainpur Area Committee. The group handed over nine automatic firearms, which had earlier been looted from police personnel during past incidents. Police sources said the cadres were influenced by the government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy and decided to abandon violence to return to the mainstream. Officials believe the surrender reflects the steady weakening of Maoist presence in the region along the Odisha–Chhattisgarh border.
