Bhubaneswar, 12/1 : The anticipated legal showdown involving renowned Odia Jatra actor Piyush Tripathy, popularly known to his fans as ‘Piyu’, took a dramatic turn today at the Bhubaneswar Civil Judge (Junior Division) Court. While the capital city buzzed with expectation regarding the actor’s scheduled personal appearance, Tripathy chose to skip the proceedings, opting instead to be represented by his legal counsel. This development comes amidst a heated contract dispute that has gripped the Odia entertainment industry and left thousands of Jatra fans in suspense.
The controversy stems from allegations brought forward by Pramod Swain, the producer of the Surya Mandir Jatra troupe. Swain contends that Tripathy breached a valid two-year exclusivity contract, which was reportedly effective until June 2026, by joining a rival group, the Singhabahini Jatra party. The breach allegedly occurred when Tripathy performed in the play ‘Tu Mo Bajrangi’ earlier this month, violating the terms of his agreement which reportedly involved a remuneration of Rs 40 lakh per annum.
During today’s hearing, which drew significant media attention and a crowd of onlookers outside the court premises, Tripathy’s lawyer, Vibhu Tripathy, presented the actor’s defense. The court had previously issued an interim order restraining the actor from performing on any stage until further notice. With the actor’s absence today, the legal team focused on responding to the show-cause notice and arguing against the continuation of the stage ban.
Sources close to the proceedings indicate that the court has not yet lifted the interim stay, meaning the popular antagonist of the Jatra world remains barred from theatrical performances for the time being. The producer of the Singhabahini troupe, Sanjib Padhi, who was also issued a notice, is reportedly part of the ongoing legal scrutiny.
The atmosphere outside the court was charged, with fans expressing disappointment at not catching a glimpse of their favorite star. The case has sparked a wider debate within the industry regarding the sanctity of artist contracts and the professional ethics governing the high-stakes world of Jatra theatre.
As the legal battle intensifies, the court is expected to schedule the next hearing soon to decide the final fate of the actor’s performance rights. Until then, the stage remains empty for Piyush Tripathy, leaving his scheduled shows in limbo and organizers scrambling for alternatives.
